How My Chronic Illnesses Inspired Me to Pursue a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Health

For many years, I battled the relentless challenges of Lyme disease and Ulcerative Colitis, enduring joint pain, chronic fatigue, and numerous other symptoms that often left me feeling defeated. There were times when I was nearly bedridden, grappling with the immense physical and emotional toll these illnesses took on my body and mind. The Turning Point
Living with chronic illnesses is a journey that demands resilience and adaptability. There were days when getting out of bed seemed impossible, yet I knew I had to find a way to manage my conditions and regain control over my life. During one particularly difficult period, I found myself reflecting on the medical care I was receiving and how traditional approaches often failed to address the holistic nature of my health struggles.

This reflection ignited a passion within me to explore integrative health—a field that emphasizes the importance of treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. I realized that my experiences with chronic illness gave me a unique perspective and a genuine desire to help others facing similar challenges. This newfound purpose motivated me to pursue a degree in integrative health.

Overcoming Hurdles
Going back to school was no easy feat, especially while managing the demands of chronic illness and having a job where I worked 50+ hours per week. There were numerous hurdles along the way, including:
Managing Symptoms: Balancing my health with the rigors of academic life was a constant struggle. I had to learn how to pace myself, listen to my body, and make adjustments as needed.
Navigating Fatigue: Chronic fatigue often made studying and attending classes difficult. I had to develop strategies to conserve energy and prioritize self-care.
Coping with Flare-Ups: During periods of illness flare-ups, I faced setbacks that required flexibility and determination to overcome. It was crucial to maintain open communication with my professors and seek accommodations when necessary.

Despite these challenges, I persevered, driven by the belief that my education would empower me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
